Features: The Western Han Dynasty is a significant period in Chinese history, spanning over 200 years. The Romance of the Western Han Dynasty depicts the era from the unification of China by Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC, including the peasant uprising led by Chen Sheng and Wu Guang, the Chu-Han War, and the establishment of the Western Han Dynasty. This covers approximately 20 years of history, during which a dynasty founded by commoners was born and laid the foundation for a new era in Chinese history.
Shanghai Renmei Publishing had published The Chu-Han Struggle in six volumes in the 1950s. In the 1960s, they revised and supplemented it to create The Romance of the Western Han Dynasty, originally planned as a 20-volume series. However, due to various reasons, only 16 volumes were published. In the 1980s, another 20-volume set of The Romance of the Western Han Dynasty was released. Now, Shanghai Renmei has reorganized and republished the 1960s edition of The Romance of the Western Han Dynasty.
Considering the historical narrative, since the original series only reached The Battle of Guangwu Mountain, additional chapters from The Chu-Han Struggle, specifically the section Suicide at Wujiang, were selected to form a separate volume as a concluding piece, ensuring the completeness of the series.
The authors who created The Romance of the Western Han Dynasty, such as Mr. Zhang Lintao, Mr. Hu Dingwen, Mr. Yan Shaotang, and Mr. Shui Tianhong, have all passed away, while some others are now elderly. Re-releasing this series of (huaben) is a way to honor and remember them, as well as fulfilling the wishes of (extensive readers) and (huaben enthusiasts).
The cover illustrations for this series were created by the renowned painter Mr. Liu Danzhai and others. Each volume provides a concise summary of its theme, with vivid depictions of characters and their actions, making it a masterpiece comparable to Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It holds great collectible value.
