Features: To enable Textbook Essentials to fulfill its unique function as a "second textbook," the People's Education Press and Yanbian Education Press invited domestic education experts and distinguished teachers from renowned key high schools across China, such as those in Huanggang City, Jiangsu Province, Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, and Wuxi City, to revise the Textbook Essentials for the college entrance examination review book (for the 2005 college entrance examination). The outstanding features of this series are as follows:
Authority – Based on the new teaching syllabus issued by the Ministry of Education, the latest high school textbooks published by the People's Education Press, and the College Entrance Examination Syllabus promulgated by the National Education Examination Administration, the People's Education Press's subject editorial departments guided the writing process and reviewed the manuscript.
Novelty – According to the trends and changes in the past two years' college entrance examination questions, the series meticulously compiles typical and thought-provoking questions, as well as original innovative problems. With real-world issues as the core, it emphasizes the novelty of the background materials and question-setting angles, focusing on assessing students' mastery of core knowledge in each subject, as well as their analytical and problem-solving thinking processes and techniques.
Forward-Thinking – Targeting the characteristics of the 2004 national college entrance examination questions—strengthening the assessment of abilities and qualities, emphasizing the practical application of knowledge in real-world production and life, and valuing the fluency and creativity of thinking—the series predicts possible question directions for the 2005 college entrance examination and provides targeted series of exercises.
Practicality – The key to success in the college entrance examination lies in the three words: "fast, accurate, and flexible." Thinking and actions must be quick; the transformation of knowledge into ability must be precise; and problem-solving methods must be diverse and adaptable. To achieve these goals, the series explicitly specifies the recommended time for each exercise, aligning with the time required for similar questions in the college entrance examination, thereby setting scientific and standardized requirements for students' problem-solving speed. Each question is assigned a score, facilitating teachers' evaluation and enabling students to assess their problem-solving abilities.
Scientificity – Whether students can achieve the greatest benefit from their college entrance examination review hinges on mastering thinking methods, techniques, and patterns, as well as engaging in scientific and targeted exercises. This series follows a "one lesson, one exercise" format, systematically summarizing the solving patterns, common mistakes, thinking expansion, transfer, and extension patterns for each lesson's key points. During the question design process, the authors emphasize the careful selection and compilation of questions, ensuring originality and flexibility, with a focus on "ability-oriented" objectives. The answers and examples are rigorous and accurate, scientifically testing students' thinking techniques and flexibly applying knowledge to interpret and evaluate social hotspots, focal issues, and real-world problems in production and life, thereby cultivating and enhancing students' agility, scientificity, depth, and divergent thinking.
Throughout the planning, drafting, writing, and reviewing process of this series, the People's Education Press and Yanbian Education Press provided support and guidance, for which we express our gratitude.
Thinking is the core of intelligence, and it is also the embodiment of ability. The characteristics of thinking are a key research topic in quality-oriented education and innovative education. In China, encouraging senior high school students to engage in independent learning, discover knowledge, seek learning patterns, and scientifically and systematically reform the college entrance examination model through targeted thinking skill training represents a new teaching approach.
