Li Keran (1907–1989) was from Xuzhou, Jiangsu. He studied under Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong, learning Qi's techniques of "ink blocks" and "ink lines," as well as Huang's methods of "accumulated ink," "damp ink," and "broken ink," enriching the expressive power of traditional techniques. Drawing inspiration from Western painting's treatment of light and shadow, he created a new style of landscape painting characterized by darkness, fullness, weight, and brightness. He taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts for many years and held positions such as Vice President of the China Artists Association and President of the Chinese Painting Research Institute. He published works such as "Li Keran Art Album" and "Li Keran Landscape Sketch Album," and authored "Li Keran's Art Theory."
