Author: Masayoshi Hirose

Publication Date: 1998-08-01
Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at Japanese learners, but it will also be helpful for Japanese educators, students of Japanese, and users who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the language. The entries listed in this dictionary focus on words that are often difficult for Japanese learners to distinguish, totaling 302 items with 708 entries. The explanations of meanings and usage are written in easy-to-understand language. To facilitate self-study, reading hiragana are marked above the kanji, and example sentences use Romanized annotations. Additionally, hiragana are placed below the kanji to help improve reading and writing skills. All content is accompanied by English translations and includes numerous illustrations. To make the classification of word meanings clear at a glance, nine types of classification symbols are used. The example sentences not only cover topics from daily life but also, in line with the nature of a usage dictionary, avoid grammatical terminology. To assist in actual sentence construction, the words in the example sentences are transformed into various parts of speech and forms. Moreover, cultural-related content is specially annotated for clarity. In addition to the main entries, small sections are included to allow readers to organize their knowledge of related statements while enjoying short readings. At the end of the volume, an index of entries, a kana index of entries, an English-Romanized index, and a classification index of word meanings are provided. Regardless of which index you use, you can quickly find the entry you are looking for. Readers are encouraged to make full use of this dictionary along with the conjugation tables of verbs. This dictionary was completed with the assistance of Japanese language educators in Japan and overseas, as well as the meticulous design, dedicated work, and collaboration of Ms. Hoshizaki Kodomo and Ms. Makiko Murakami, a freelance writer, from the editorial team of Kodansha dictionaries. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of them.
