Historical Culture

The history of Laoniuwan can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. At that time, in order to resist invasions by northern nomadic peoples, the imperial court built Laoniuwan Fort here as an important part of the Great Wall defense system. The ancient fort was built against the mountains, with a strategically dangerous terrain, and together with the natural barrier of the Yellow River formed a solid military defense line, witnessing the rise and fall of ancient border defense.

Over the long course of time, Laoniuwan became a transportation hub and a node of commercial exchange between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, forming a unique culture of blended Shanxi-Inner Mongolian folk customs. Local villagers have lived along the banks of the Yellow River for generations, making a living by fishing and farming, and have preserved many traditional customs and handicrafts, such as Yellow River fishing techniques and cave dwelling construction techniques. These are vivid carriers of Yellow River culture.

In modern times, because of its unique geographical location and natural landscapes, Laoniuwan gradually became known to the outside world and became an important sample for studying Yellow River culture, Great Wall culture, and Shanxi-Inner Mongolian folk culture. It has also allowed more people to understand the survival wisdom and historical inheritance of the people of the Yellow River basin.

Main Attractions

Laoniuwan Ancient Fort

Laoniuwan Ancient Fort was first built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. It covers an area of about 3,000 square meters. The walls were built with local stone and are distributed in an irregular shape according to the mountain terrain. Inside the fort, remains of military facilities such as watchtowers, barbicans, and barbican gates are preserved, and some residential buildings still retain the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Standing at the top of the ancient fort, visitors can overlook the magnificent scenery of the Yellow River Grand Canyon and feel the perfect combination of ancient military defense projects and natural barriers.

Yellow River Grand Canyon

The Yellow River Grand Canyon presents a large "U"-shaped turn in the Laoniuwan section. Here, the Yellow River channel winds and turns, forming multiple "S"-shaped bends. The mountain rocks on both sides are steep, and the vegetation is sparse, fully displaying the desolate beauty of the Loess Plateau. Looking into the distance from a high place, the Yellow River is like a golden ribbon wrapped around the mountains, and the scenery is spectacular. It is an ideal shooting location for photography enthusiasts.
