Features: This book aims to achieve significant breakthroughs in two aspects:
1. Focusing on the major changes in the global television industry under the backdrop of economic globalization, it draws on the latest achievements in foreign television theory research in recent years to explore the ultimate socio-economic reasons influencing the content and effects of television communication.
2. Overcoming the limitations of past television criticism theories that conflated with general literary criticism theories, it directs the criticism toward the institutional arrangements and systemic reasons that have weakened the humanistic spirit of television communication. This provides theoretical support and academic grounds for preventing and addressing the commercialization and vulgarization of television communication, as well as for solving the fundamental issue facing Chinese television: how to serve the people of China and be responsible to future generations. The frequent absence of television criticism is one of the important reasons for the escalating commercialization, vulgarization, and homogenization of television communication. Whether from the perspective of the development of the global television industry or the evolution of Chinese television, television criticism theory should be recognized and given its due importance and status as a form of supervision and correction for television communication.
As a major research project of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, this book rejects commercial (commercial sensationalism) in the form of "bashing television," the selective application of Western television theories, and superficial scans of the surface of television communication. While systematically reviewing Western television criticism theories, the book is grounded in rational reflections on the localization and indigenization of television criticism theory. It fully utilizes the latest texts and experiences of China's television reform and development in recent years, focusing on examining the various mistakes and missteps of Chinese television under the impact of the market economy. Through in-depth scientific and rational analysis, it provides substantial support for the study of television criticism theory based on contemporary television communication practices.
