Publish Date: 2001-08-01
Features: The giant fish dreamed of academically, pursued for over thirty years, it was once a fantasy, and now it remains a fantasy. Life is perhaps like this after all. Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea wasn't just written randomly.
Zhang Wuchang: In 1959, he studied at the Department of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles, under the founder of modern property rights economics, Armen Alchian. In 1967, he obtained his doctorate and then joined Nobel laureate Coase for work. In 1969, he was appointed as a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Since 1982, he has been a professor at the University of Hong Kong. Zhang Wuchang is one of the founders of modern institutional economics and modern property rights economics. In 1997, he was elected as the president of the Western Economic Association, a position that had never before been awarded to an economist outside the United States.
Many of Mr. Zhang's articles seem casual and understated, yet they are rich in meaning and hit the mark with precision. Reading his essays allows one to appreciate the subtle beauty hidden between the lines. The philosophy hidden behind the main text can only be understood after rereading it or reflecting upon it after closing the book. To read to such a degree is, as Mr. Zhang himself would say, "extremely satisfying."
