In 1967, he obtained his doctorate degree. Subsequently, he joined Nobel laureate Ronald Coase and worked with him. In 1969, he was appointed as a professor at the University of Washington. Since 1982, he has been a professor at the University of Hong Kong. Zhang Wuchen is one of the founders of new institutional economics and modern property rights economics. In 1997, he was elected as the president of the Western Economic Association, a position that had never been awarded to an economist outside the United States before. Many of Mr. Zhang's articles seem casual and lightly written, yet they are deeply meaningful and hit the mark. Reading his essays allows one to appreciate the subtle charm hidden between the lines. The philosophy hidden behind the main text can only be understood after rereading or reflecting upon it after closing the book. Reading to this extent, as Mr. Zhang himself once said, is truly "extremely satisfying."
