In 1967, he obtained his Ph.D. degree, and subsequently worked with Nobel laureate Coase. In 1969, he was appointed as a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Since 1982, he has been a professor at the University of Hong Kong. Zhang Wuchang is one of the founders of new institutional economics and modern property rights economics. In 1997, he was elected as the president of the Western Economic Association, a position that was never previously awarded to an economist outside the United States. Many of Mr. Wuchang's articles, though seemingly casual and understated, are actually full of depth and precision. Reading his essays allows one to appreciate the subtle meaning hidden within the words. The philosophy hidden behind the main text can only be understood after rereading it or reflecting upon it after reading it multiple times. To reach such a state of reading, as Mr. Wuchang himself would say, is truly "exhilarating."
