Features: Written in the glow of fire and blood, this modern Chinese literature records the disintegration of China's long feudal society and the agonizing transformation from a feudal society to a semi-feudal and semi-colonial society; it documents the arduous journey of the Chinese people a century ago as they stepped into the 20th century; it records the explorations and sacrifices made by the Chinese people for the future of their nation and the fate of their country. Today, with the smooth return of Hong Kong and Macau, and as the Chinese people have stood up and are becoming wealthier, taking a century-long retrospect to look at the hesitant China standing at the threshold of the 20th century undoubtedly holds special significance. The compilation and publication of the selected poems and prose of Kang Youwei were intended to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Hundred Days' Reform Movement, as well as the 100th anniversary of the birth of its leader, Kang Youwei. Since the Hundred Days' Reform Movement played a certain progressive role in the history of the Chinese revolution, Kang Youwei's liberalist ideas also held certain progressive significance under the historical conditions of that time.
