How long can people with Down syndrome generally live?

Patient's question:

My child was carefully examined after birth and found to have Down syndrome. I would like to ask how long, on average, do people with this condition live? Can they undergo healthy transformation?

Doctor's answer:

Approximately 250 children with Down syndrome may face death within a year, and more than half of them may live much longer with treatment. However, they generally face death within five years, and many may live longer if treated appropriately. In such cases, they should receive active treatment. If screening tests indicate a high risk of the fetus having Down syndrome, further diagnostic tests—amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling—should be performed.
