Who gets galactosemia

Patient's question:

I came across the disease called galactosemia online. I had never heard of it before, so I was very curious. Who gets galactosemia? Is there anyone who knows what galactosemia is?

Doctor's answer:

Galactosemia in children is also known as glucose-galactose intolerance. It is divided into two types. Primary, it is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by intestinal glucose malabsorption, primarily characterized by neonatal self-stooling, severe nausea and vomiting in the early stages. It is also intolerant of disaccharides. Because disaccharides also need to be broken down into lactose or glucose, nausea and vomiting will still occur even after feeding with glucose water.
