It is suitable for researchers and students of philosophical thought to reference and learn from. Even if Western classics are translated into Chinese, it does not mean that the Chinese academic community has the ability to interpret them. The history of translating Western academic works into Chinese, though only a century old, has already accumulated a wealth of material. Yet, it seems that the academic interpretation still struggles with half-baked understanding—even raw material that cannot be digested. Translating works that interpret Western classics by Western scholars and fully utilizing the well-established achievements of Western academia in preserving and organizing these works is of great significance in continuing the unfinished task of understanding Western intellectual traditions since the late Qing Dynasty. The translation community is not unenthusiastic about translating research works by Western scholars, and there are even large-scale translation series. However, it is evident that the topics of such translations are mostly limited to general histories or biographical evaluations, failing to advance into in-depth close readings. The design of this "Western Tradition: Classics and Interpretations" aims to promote a deeper understanding of the Western intellectual tradition among scholars. The selection of topics not only considers the many urgent research gaps but also focuses on choosing interpretations by prominent thinkers and dedicated intellectual historians of classics.
