Features: Huang Kan (1886–1935), originally named Qiao Xin, later changed his name to Kan, styled Li Gang, and later self-styled as Liang Shou Jushi, was a native of Xichun, Hubei. In his youth, Huang Kan actively participated in the revolution to overthrow the feudal rule of the Qing Dynasty. After the establishment of the Republic of China, he saw warlords seizing power and facing both internal and external threats, leading him to withdraw from politics. From 1914 onwards, he successively taught at Peking University, Wuchang Normal School, Zhonghua University, Shanxi University, Beijing Normal University, Northeastern University, Jinling University, and Central University. He passed away in 1935. Professor Huang Kan made profound studies in phonology and phonetics, proposing the "Nineteen Initials of Ancient Sounds" and the "Twenty-Eight Rhyme Sections of Ancient Rhymes," which inherited and developed the research achievements of traditional phonology and phonetics, leaving a significant impact. However, only a few works have been publicly published, such as Yin Lüe (A Brief Account of Phonetics), Sheng Yun Lüe Shuo (A Brief Explanation of Phonology and Phonetics), and Sheng Yun Xue Biji (Notes on Phonology and Phonetics) recorded by Huang Zhuo, as well as parts quoted from Qian Xuantong's Sheng Yun Xue Jiang Yi (Lectures on Phonology and Phonetics). Here, we have collated and proofread the manuscripts of Professor Huang Kan's works, such as Guyun Pugao (Draft of the Ancient Rhyme Spectrum) and Fushi Tangyun Kao (A Study on the Reorganization of the Tang Rhyme), and compiled them into Huang Kan Yi Shu (The Remains of Huang Kan) for publication.
