Features: The term "Wohu Ling" refers to Dong Yi, a renowned Han Dynasty official known for his integrity, impartial justice, and fearlessness of power. The origin of the title is as follows: During the Eastern Han Dynasty, a slave of Lakeyang Princess, the sister of Emperor Guangwu, murdered someone during the day and was protected by her master. Dong Yi, serving as the magistrate of Luoyang, the capital, despite his low official rank, showed no fear of the powerful and intercepted the slave when he was accompanying the princess in her carriage. He publicly criticized the princess's misconduct, ordered the slave to get off the carriage, and ultimately subdued and killed him. Lakeyang Princess reported the incident to Emperor Guangwu, who initially demanded Dong Yi's execution. However, after hearing Dong Yi's defense, the emperor ordered him to bow and apologize to the princess to resolve the matter. Dong Yi, believing himself innocent, refused to comply. When eunuchs forced his head down, he stubbornly supported himself with both hands, refusing to bow. Emperor Guangwu, recognizing his loyalty, called him "Qiangxiang Ling" (meaning "the magistrate with an unyielding neck"). After this incident, Dong Yi further suppressed the arrogance of other powerful figures in the capital. From then on, the nobles of the capital dared no longer to violate the law, and the common people began calling Dong Yi "Wohu" (meaning "the sleeping tiger").
This novel, based on the extremely limited historical records of Dong Yi, draws inspiration from the deeds of other honest officials during the Han Dynasty andly fabricates a vivid and well-rounded artistic portrayal of a just official. Historical figures such as Emperor Guangwu, Lakeyang Princess, Song Hong, Wang Mang, and Liu Xin, the state teacher of Wang Mang's Xin Dynasty, are all creatively reimagined based on historical facts, each with distinct personalities and brought to life. In terms of writing style, the author draws on the traditions of classical Chinese novels: emphasizing character portrayal through actions and focusing on the vivid and intricate nature of the stories. Many of the tales are constructed around the investigation of complex and puzzling cases, showcasing the "romantic" strengths of legal drama novels. However, the author also avoids the flaws of such works, which often prioritize novelty over character development. At the same time, the novel broadly and authentically recreates the social landscape of the transition period between the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties, giving it a strong historical sense.
