Features: The College English Intensive Reading series published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press is a recommended "Four Excellence" public English textbook series by the Ministry of Education. After two revisions in 1998 and this year, the third edition is now available. To assist students in mastering the textbook, building a solid foundation in English, and overcoming potential difficulties during their learning process, while saving valuable study time and improving learning efficiency, we have organized experienced teachers and English experts from key universities to compile a supplementary guide for the College English Intensive Reading (Third Edition) titled "College English Intensive Reading Study Manual" for the. The "College English Intensive Reading Study Manual" consists of four volumes, each containing ten units, with the content organized in the order of the texts. The specific content is as follows:
1. Warm-up Questions Answers: Provides reference answers to the warm-up questions at the beginning of each text to help students practice correct and natural spoken English, thereby improving their oral communication skills.
2. Text Background Knowledge: The texts are selected from original English works and cover a wide range of topics with profound themes and complex backgrounds. To help students thoroughly understand the texts and grasp language and cultural knowledge comprehensively, this section offers background information related to the language and culture of the texts.
3. Key Vocabulary Explanations: Based on the College English Teaching Syllabus, the compilers select 15 key and challenging vocabulary words from each unit for detailed explanations. The explanations aim to help students summarize memory techniques, introduce common collocations, and provide typical exam questions for assessment, thereby laying a solid vocabulary foundation. The fourth volume, in addition to selecting vocabulary for the CET-4, also includes key and challenging vocabulary for the CET-6.
4. Text Difficulties and Explanations: Focusing on the practical challenges students face in learning English, this section provides detailed explanations of as many difficult sentences as possible from the texts. Both English and Chinese translations are included. For key and challenging points, the compilers are not stingy with space, while for general issues, they provide concise explanations. Usage, examples, and explanations are all appropriately detailed.
5. Text Annotations and Translations: Since some difficulties in the texts are explained in English, some students may find it hard to fully grasp them. Therefore, the compilers have translated the entire section into Chinese to help students better understand the texts.
6. Text Reference Translations: The compilers have provided accurate and elegant translations of the texts to help students fully and correctly understand the content. This is especially helpful when encountering complex sentence structures or culturally relevant language.
7. Distinctive and Commonly Confused Words: As English learning deepens and vocabulary expands, synonyms become increasingly numerous, making English learning more challenging. To help students master easily confused synonyms and near-synonyms, this section offers detailed explanations and distinctions for these error-prone and easily mixed-up words.
8. Text Exercises Answers and Explanations: All exercises in the textbook are provided with complete answers, along with detailed explanations for each question. The purpose is to help learners overcome difficulties when doing exercises and achieve a deeper understanding—not just knowing what the answer is, but why it is correct.
