The Mount Sanqing Scenic and Historic Area in Shangrao City is located in the northeastern part of Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, at the junction of Yushan County and Dexing City, with a total area of 756.6 square kilometers, of which the core scenic area covers 230 square kilometers. The main peak, Yujing Peak, rises 1,819.9 meters above sea level. The mountain is named after the three peaks of Yujing, Yuxu and Yuhua, which "sit atop it like the Three Pure Ones of Daoism." The scenic area is under the unified management of the Mount Sanqing Management Committee and comprises ten major scenic zones: Nanqingyuan, West Coast, Sanqing Palace, Tiyunling, Yujing Peak, Sunshine Coast, Yuling Temple, Three Caves Mouth, Bingyu Cave and Shigu Ridge.
The main body of the scenic area is a Late Yanshanian granite intrusion with an exposed area of about 98 square kilometers, forming 48 grotesque peaks and 89 shaped rocks. It features granite peak-forest microgeomorphic landscapes such as "Oriental Goddess" and "Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain." Strata from the Proterozoic to the Quaternary are all present, and the Xinjiang River originates here. Daoist activity began in the Shengping era of the Eastern Jin dynasty (357–361) when Ge Hong practiced alchemy. The extant Sanqing Palace is laid out according to the Earlier Heaven Bagua, and preserves relics such as the Dan Well and the Bagua Furnace.
On August 29, 2011, the Mount Sanqing Scenic and Historic Area of Shangrao City was approved as a National AAAAA-level Tourist Attraction by the National Tourist Attraction Quality Grade Evaluation Committee. In 2012 it was inscribed on the list of World Geoparks, in 2016 it became a National Green Tourism Demonstration Base, and in 2021 it was selected as one of the first batch of National Civilized Tourism Demonstration Units. The scenic area has two cableways, Jinsha and Waishuangxi. The West Coast high-altitude plank road has an average elevation of 1,600 meters, and the Sunshine Coast plank road is 3,600 meters long.
