The scientific and technical terms used in the book are based on those approved by relevant authorities; for those not yet approved or standardized, conventional usage is followed. Proper nouns related to Chinese history are generally based on the Twenty-Four Histories or other major historical texts. Place names follow those approved by the Chinese Name Commission for Geographical Names; ancient place names are consistently annotated with their modern equivalents when they first appear, and if the exact location cannot be determined, the modern name of the administrative division or jurisdiction is noted.
