Patient's question:
I currently have facial paralysis and it has been treated. It's been almost two years now, and I don't know if it might flare up again. I want to know if a facial paralysis that has lasted for two years might still flare up?Doctor's answer:
A person with Bell's palsy may experience a recurrence of symptoms if they do not rest properly or if their physical condition worsens during the treatment process. Once the symptoms stabilize, they may reappear. Most people will recover completely, but if they do not take precautions, a few may experience a second or even third recurrence. This is because the affected nerves have a relatively lower autoimmune resistance to the cold virus, making them more susceptible to recurrence. There may also be another aspect (a healthy aspect) of Bell's palsy. Some patients may even experience three or four episodes of Bell's palsy. The severity of each episode will vary. In severe cases, residual symptoms may remain, such as drooling, difficulty breathing, closing the eyes, tearing, facial muscle spasms, back pain, and headaches.
