Zhangjiajie landform is a special type of sandstone landform. It is formed with nearly horizontal Middle and Upper Devonian quartz sandstone as the parent rock for landscape formation, and through processes such as water erosion, gravitational collapse, and weathering, it has created a landscape dominated by tall stone pillar forests with straight edges and flat surfaces. It has a northern subtropical monsoon humid climate, with an average annual temperature of 17°C. The natural scenery is remarkable for its spectacular peaks, secluded valleys, and lush forests. Among them are more than 3,000 grotesque peaks, resembling people, animals, utensils, and objects, vivid and majestic, and it is known as having "three thousand grotesque peaks and eight hundred beautiful waters." Major attractions include Huangshizhai, Jinbian Stream, Yuanjiajie, and Yangjiajie.
