Is the facial paralysis coming back going to get better?

Patient's question:

These days, I've been experiencing twitching sensations in my face. Sometimes, while eating dinner or making facial expressions, my facial muscles suddenly twitch a few times. What could be causing this? I used to have Bell's palsy, which was treated and resolved, but it seems to have returned again. Can it still be treated?

Doctor's answer:

The treatment principles for Bell's palsy involve promoting local inflammation, edema reduction, and early resolution while enhancing the complete recovery of nerve function. For peripheral facial nerve palsy caused by viral infection, medications such as antivirals, neurotrophic agents, corticosteroids, and B vitamins can be used. Protecting exposed corneas and preventing conjunctival issues can be achieved by using eye drops and ointments. Manual massage of the paralyzed facial muscles, performed daily for 5–10 minutes each session, is also recommended. Common physical therapy methods include ultrashort wave therapy, low-to-mid frequency electrotherapy, laser therapy, and medication infusion.
