Patient's question:
The other day, I talked with a colleague and learned that her son has infantile paralysis. It's said that this condition is not easy to treat and may leave behind sequelae. I'd like to ask what are the symptoms and sequelae of infantile paralysis?Doctor's answer:
Post-polio syndrome is a serious disabling condition that results in lifelong limb disabilities in affected children. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is an acute infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. It manifests as scarring and contracture of the hip joints, or relaxation without dislocation of the hip joints. Symptoms include flexion deformities of the knees, inward or outward bending of the lower legs, muscle atrophy and weakness, and unequal leg lengths. Various deformities can also occur in the feet, spine, and pelvis. Treatment can involve surgical correction.
