Patient's question:
The child is 11 years old and has been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia. We were unaware of this disease. Could you please explain what severe aplastic anemia is?Doctor's answer:
Aplastic anemia is a common disease in hematology, abbreviated as AA, primarily affecting young and middle-aged adults. The incidence rate in males is lower than in females. It is a disease that arises due to interference from various factors, leading to a disruption in the self-healing function of bone marrow, resulting in clinical symptoms such as anemia and easy bruising. Aplastic anemia is caused by the weakening of the self-healing function of hematopoietic stem cells. When anemia is severe, active surgical intervention may be required to correct the anemia, along with the use of iron chelators for iron treatment. In the early stages, anemia is often not apparent, but as the disease progresses, it becomes progressively worse. Almost all patients exhibit a tendency to bleed, which may include severe internal bleeding and sepsis. Without effective treatment, most patients die within 6-12 months.
