Diabetes urine viscosity is it kidney disease

Patient's question:

My grandfather has had diabetes for over ten years now. He often urinates a lot, and the urine is particularly sticky. I think this might mean his kidneys are also affected. Is this kidney disease?

Doctor's answer:

If you have diabetes and are experiencing symptoms of diabetic nephropathy (urine thickening) and frequent urination, it is likely that your diabetes condition has worsened, and some complications have reappeared. For example, diabetic nephropathy is a common complication. When diabetic complications reoccur, it is often due to poor blood sugar control in diabetic patients. Therefore, medications to lower blood sugar must be taken long-term and should not be stopped or reduced arbitrarily.
