How to distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?

Patient's question:

One of my classmates has diabetes. I don't understand this disease well, nor do I know if it's treatable or not. I'm also unclear about how it was caused and how to determine whether it's Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Doctor's answer:

There are Type 1 and Type 2, and if not well-controlled, it can lead to various different complications, such as heart, cerebral blood vessels, kidneys, etc. Active treatment is needed, and prevention measures are required to prevent the recurrence of complications. Blood tests for fasting and post-meal blood sugar, as well as insulin levels, are needed to make a diagnosis. If insulin levels are very low and there is no significant drop after meals, Type 1 should be considered. Conversely, if insulin levels drop significantly, Type 2 should be considered.
