What are the symptoms of fatty liver?

Patient's question:

I am 43 years old this year, divorced for over 10 years, and now my children are in high school. Both my wife and I are full-time employees of state-owned enterprises. However, recently I have been experiencing poor appetite. Since my wife is a medical professional, she always suspects that I have fatty liver disease. What are the symptoms of fatty liver disease?

Doctor's answer:

The clinical manifestations of fatty liver are diverse. Mild fatty liver often lacks clinical diagnostic symptoms and is easily overlooked; over 25% may be asymptomatic. Moderate to severe fatty liver: It exhibits symptoms similar to chronic hepatitis, such as fatigue and weakness, hypochondriac pain, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, postprandial abdominal pain, and discomfort in the right upper abdomen or both hypochondria, which are more pronounced after meals, after drinking alcohol, and during physical activity. A very small number may have jaundice, splenomegaly, cirrhosis, right upper abdominal pain, glossitis, angular cheilitis, and limb numbness.
Treatment aspects:
- Cause-based treatment: Limit alcohol intake, adjust diet to reduce fat and protect the liver.
- Dietary re-adjustment: Nutritional and endocrine disorders are the main causes of fatty liver. Both malnutrition and overnutrition are harmful to the liver.
