Publish Date: 2007-01-01
Features: In the 1950s and 1960s, our press organized the publication of selections of outstanding long novels nationwide, showcasing the style and level of long novel creation at the time. After the New Period, the number of long novels surged, with themes, styles, and techniques becoming increasingly diverse. To more comprehensively reflect the achievements of long novel creation during this era, in May 2004, we edited and published the series "Representative Works of Renowned Contemporary Chinese Novelists," featuring the works of twenty-five writers. These works excelled in depth, uniqueness, evoking strong responses, or were widely enjoyed by readers. The series received positive social feedback after publication. For this re-publication, we adjusted the original series' selection, adding more works, while including those that won the Mao Dun Literature Prize in the "Complete Collection of Mao Dun Literature Prize Winners." Thus, the "Representative Works of Renowned Contemporary Chinese Novelists" series now offers a more complete and comprehensive selection, aligning with our previously published "Contemporary Chinese Long Novel Collection" and "Complete Collection of Mao Dun Literature Prize Winners," creating a cohesive and complementary reading experience. This novel recounts the tumultuous rise and fall, joys and sorrows of a revolutionary intellectual family. From the Pearl River Delta and Jiangnan water towns in the late 1930s to the West Lake shores of Hangzhou in the 1990s, a pair of lovers who joined the revolution in their youth endure half a century of life-and-death struggles. Yet their romantic passion remains undiminished, and their love endures. The author offers profound reflections on the red storm that swept across China over the past half-century.
