Changes in the UK's labor relations adjustment agency

Publish Date: 2007-01-01
Features: This issue is specially presented in commemoration of the thirty years that the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) has been working in the core areas of labor relations in the UK. The authors, Alan Neal and John Taylor, once worked in Beijing, providing technical assistance for projects related to the establishment of labor arbitration tribunals in China. During the process of discussions, they gradually developed the idea of editing and publishing this book. Subsequently, under the guidance of editor Linda Dickens and in collaboration with Alan Neal, the book gradually took shape at the University of Warwick. The editors aim to provide readers with a comprehensive introduction to the current state of the UK labor relations system, as many existing materials are now outdated and lack comprehensiveness, covering only parts of the relevant systems. We believe that if we can provide a comprehensive and expertly written resource on the current adjustments and institutions of UK labor relations, including discussions on the current development status and future challenges, it would greatly benefit policymakers, researchers, students, and other readers. Therefore, we began to invite contributions for this book. The authors invited to contribute to this book are all renowned academic experts and practitioners in the field, particularly those involved in specific institutional aspects. However, the distinction between academic experts and practitioners is also difficult to make. Some authors have held different positions at different times; many authors simultaneously participate in academic projects while acting as practitioners or institutional builders; and some non-academic theoretical roles sometimes reflect practical or operational content. We believe that this combination can effectively bridge professionals and those directly involved in the practical operations of various institutions, providing them with the opportunity to engage in independent and in-depth discussions, which is highly valuable. We sincerely hope that this book will not only attract readers' interest due to the wide range of content it covers but also that the content itself is inherently relevant to the topics discussed. For this reason, the editorial team has intentionally avoided imposing personal opinions of the authors. We sincerely thank all the authors for their enthusiastic acceptance of our invitation, for dedicating valuable time to contribute to this work, and for pouring their efforts into this manuscript according to our content and structural needs.
