Publish Date: 2003-09-01
Features: All 80 authors of this book are from the United States. A small portion are native-born American Chinese, a few are technical immigrants from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the majority are students who came from mainland China after the 1980s. Except for a few exceptions, they are basically not writers or even people in the literary world. They are engineers, teachers, businesspeople, company employees, artists, workers, and housewives. Although writing is not their profession, it is also a way of life and expression for many of them.
Book Content: Many years ago, I observed a phenomenon in San Francisco. Asian children in the United States gather together, influencing each other, as if they are afraid of not being accepted by American society. They often become more "American" than American children, and mostly from the lower strata of American society, such as wearing oversized pants, cutting bizarre hairstyles, and piercing multiple rings all over their bodies. Even the upright American middle-class families do not allow their children to turn into that kind of style. I did not want to see my daughter adopt the bad habits of the lower strata of American society, so we moved out of San Francisco. East of San Francisco, in Alameda City, which was once called Little White Island, there are also many Asian children in the middle school. My daughter joined them, and within a few months, she refused to go out with us anymore. She said that as a middle school student, she still went shopping with her parents, and her classmates would laugh at her and call her "little baby."
