Publish Date: 2003-07-01
Features: New Short Stories and Novellas by Wan Fang, the daughter of renowned playwright Cao Yu. Perhaps it's because she comes from a distinguished family. As the daughter of Cao Yu, Wan Fang's works feel more like sharing family stories, recounting enduring tales. Her experiences make her writing somewhat detached from our daily lives, yet the atmosphere remains pure and fragrant. The story "No Bullets" raises the question: What should one truly value in life? Wang Gao, a young boy raised in a divorced family, is clueless about the meaning of life. He wants to take revenge on life but lacks a reason. "Flying with Angels" depicts the life of the Cultural Revolution. The rightist poet Ma Fu, in his fallen state, demonstrates healthy and noble spiritual qualities, attracting the ignorant and foolish Li Sanliang. Their spiritual exchange draws them together, permeating each other. The novel "Murder" is a story set in a rural area in Northeast China. Six decades after being abandoned by her husband, the protagonist finally kills her own mother-in-law, whom she has cared for her whole life. Cao Yu made his final remarks before leaving the world: "I think the novel 'Murder' has strength and makes people contemplate. I once worried that she might be a more introspective author, but now I don't worry about that. She can write about completely different things, different people and lives, and it's all so authentic."
