This time, Mr. Hu Haiya has selflessly contributed his long-preserved manuscripts, a great blessing for the xianxue community and providing a reliable and detailed theoretical foundation for later generations of xianxue scholars. The content of the book, even in the newly published Authoritative Taoist Works Zhonghua Daozang and Daoist Texts Collection, is not fully preserved, making it even more precious. Among them, Commentary on the I Ching and the Neiye is published on the mainland for the first time; Collected and Classified Sayings of the Yueyu Hall (also known as Comprehensive Record of the Hidden Secrets of the Oral Instructions), is a classified and compiled work by Chen Yongning after completing The Preliminary Collection of the Hidden Secrets of the Oral Instructions. Chen Yongning instructed his student, Mr. Miao Dejun, to categorize and compile the Sayings of the Yueyu Hall and the Commentary on the Dao De Jing, rearranging them according to Chen Yongning’s xianxue academic philosophy. After reorganization, Chen Yongning added annotations to the covers of each volume, making it easier for later readers to follow. This book has been treasured by Mr. Hu Haiya for over half a century and is now publicly shared for the first time, benefiting all xianxue enthusiasts. The legacy of ancient Chinese xianxue is extremely rich, but for a long time, only a few scholars have diligently cultivated this field, pioneering its development. In recent years, the study of xianxue in China has been rapidly heating up, yet due to the scarcity of materials, most research has been argumentative rather than systematic. Although there have been many studies on ancient Chinese xianxue thought, the key challenge for contemporary xianxue scholars lies in whether they can organize and summarize these findings from a modern scientific perspective, methodology, and viewpoint. Therefore, the invaluable materials provided by Mr. Hu Haiya at his advanced age are timely and will have a profound impact on academia. It is hoped that the publication of this book will enable numerous xianxue enthusiasts to learn, study, and benefit from it, cherishing this precious xianxue cultural heritage! Xianxue scholarship is the essence of traditional Chinese culture, with records dating back to the Xuanyuan era, spanning over five thousand years. However, due to historical limitations, this discipline has not developed as it should have. Especially between the Eastern Han Dynasty and the early Republic of China, nearly two thousand years, xianxue was in a state of having xian (immortality) but no xue (scholarship). At that time, those who practiced xianxue either hid under the guise of the Three Teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism), sought refuge in sorcery, or found themselves in other pursuits. They preached the name while pursuing the reality, leaving xianxue without its true independent academic status. The extraordinary xianxue scholarship of China nearly became extinct. It was not until the 1920s of this century that the great xianxue master Chen Yongning, unable to tolerate the threat of foreign cultures to traditional Chinese culture and the near-extinction of Chinese xianxue scholarship, reluctantly extracted xianxue scholarship from the circle of the Three Teachings and established it as a specialized discipline for research. This was to support the independent and free development of xianxue and to break free from the constraints of other religious doctrines.
