[Preface] Lawn grass seeds are a crucial material foundation for urban green space engineering construction. They are also materials for ecological engineering construction in arid and semi-arid regions and soil and water conservation engineering construction in soil erosion areas. With the rapid increase in the area of artificial grasslands in China, along with the expansion of national land management and ecological construction, as well as the implementation of "no exposed yellow earth" projects in medium and large cities, the foundational role of lawn grass seeds has become increasingly important. Currently, lawn grasses are expanding from major cities to smaller cities and from urban areas to rural areas. Artificial grassland construction is being vigorously developed as an effective measure to rapidly increase urban green coverage. The lawn industry has become one of the most dynamic emerging industries. Due to the continuous expansion of grassland construction areas, the demand for lawn grass seeds has surged. However, the current production capacity and output of lawn grass seeds in China are low and insufficient to meet the needs of the lawn industry. The quantity and quality of lawn grass seeds will significantly affect the scale and speed of China's lawn industry development. Currently, the seeds used for lawn construction are largely imported, which not only diverts one-third of the total funds of the lawn industry to foreign countries but also has an adverse impact on the developing lawn industry. Therefore, it is imperative to research and improve lawn grass seed production technology, establish China's own lawn grass seed production bases, and achieve the localization of lawn grass seeds.
Based on the urgent need for lawn grass seed localization in China and the production of high-quality lawn grass seeds to meet the growing demands of ecological construction, soil and water conservation, and urban greening, and considering China's vast territory, diverse climates, and abundant grass species, which provide natural conditions for various types of lawn grass seed production, we organized the writing of Lawn Technology Manual·Lawn Grass Seed Production Technology. This book serves as a reference for scientific and technical personnel, teaching staff, lawn grass seed production technicians, marketing personnel, and management personnel involved in lawn grass research. It can also be used as a reference book for relevant majors in agricultural and forestry colleges.
This book was organized and written by Shi Shangli (Editor-in-Chief) and Zhao Guiqin (Deputy Editor-in-Chief), comprising eleven chapters. Chapters 1, 3, and 9 were written by Shi Shangli; Chapters 2 and 6 were written by Zhao Guiqin; Chapter 4 was written by Feng Yuqin; Chapters 5 and 10 were written by Du Wenhua; Chapter 7 was written by Hu Guixin; Chapter 8 was written by Bai Xiaoming; and Chapter 11 was written by Cao Wenxia. Professor Chen Baoshu of the College of Grassland Science at Gansu Agricultural University provided meticulous guidance during the writing process and conducted peer review. Associate Professor Liu Xiaoni edited the color illustrations, figures, tables, and text. Shi Shangli, Zhao Guiqin, and Wu Dongguo provided a large number of color photographs related to lawn grass seed production. Considering the practical guidance for lawn grass seed production, the content of this book emphasizes the integration of theory and technology, highlighting systematicity and practicality.
