Features: To mark the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002, at the request of the 55th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Chinese Government reviewed and summarized the progress made in implementing the strategy for sustainable development in China from 1992 to 2001, and specially compiled the National Report on Sustainable Development of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese Government attached great importance to the WSSD conference and the compilation of the national report, establishing the China National Committee for the World Summit on Sustainable Development on July 2, 2001, with the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State Environmental Protection Administration as core units, in conjunction with relevant departments. On August 11, 2001, the China National Committee for the World Summit on Sustainable Development established the Leading Group, Working Group, and Expert Group for the report's compilation. The preparation of the report received strong support from governments at all levels, relevant departments, and social organizations. To ensure that this report accurately reflects the progress made in implementing China's strategy for sustainable development, various methods were adopted to solicit opinions from all parties, especially fully soliciting the opinions and suggestions of non-governmental organizations and people from all walks of life, thus giving the report a broad public foundation. In view of the fact that the Chinese Government had already provided the National Report on Sustainable Development of the People's Republic of China (1997) to the 19th Special Session of the General Assembly held in June 1997, in accordance with Resolution 113 of the 50th Session of the UN General Assembly in 1995, this report focuses on elaborating the progress made since 1996. This report has been approved by the Government of the People's Republic of China. We hope this report can provide useful support and contribution to the 2002 United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development.
