The book is published in volumes. Marshals and generals are arranged according to the official list announced at the time. Others are sorted in order of seniority: senior generals, medium-ranking generals, and junior generals, with names within the same rank arranged by stroke order. Generals promoted between 1955 and 1964, including those promoted to higher ranks in 1988 or later, are introduced in the text but not listed in the roster order. The volume includes 10 marshals, 10 senior generals, 57 medium generals, and 177 junior generals. 1,360 junior generals are divided between the second and third volumes. A few individuals who later took a negative path are still included in the book to accurately reflect history and preserve the historical records in their entirety.
