Features: This little book focuses on the philosophy of military strategy: one is the strategy itself, and the other is the thoughts within it. For this reason, I have included relevant military knowledge and discussions on the history of thought in the book. The content is richer than before, the structure is clearer, and the presentation is more enjoyable. I hope readers will like it. The Art of War is the earliest work in the genre of military strategy, but its vastness and depth have never been surpassed. This book can truly be said to be the culmination of the art of strategy. Among all previous military thinkers, only Carl von Clausewitz can be compared to him, but even he is considered "outdated" and somewhat old-fashioned, despite writing his works two thousand years later than Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu has clearer vision, deeper insights, and a lasting charm.
Because of a book titled A Pot of Wine in the Flower Garden, Professor Li Ling of Peking University became widely known for his literary reputation. Before that, it was known earlier that Professor Li Ling's main field of study was archaeology, ancient scripts, and ancient texts, with published works such as The Study of Chinese Esoteric Arts and The Continuation of the Study of Chinese Esoteric Arts. He is also one of the most accomplished scholars in China studying The Art of War, having published works such as Exploring the Secrets of Wu Sun Tzu and A Study of the Ancient Texts of The Art of War, along with numerous papers. This book is the lecture notes of Professor Li Ling from his The Art of War course at Peking University. With a unique perspective, fluent and lively language, and rich, specific materials, the author presents the essence of this great ancient Chinese military work to readers, introduces the profound and long-standing knowledge of Chinese military studies, and conducts comparative research on related fields such as military science, the history of thought, and ancient philosophy.
