Features: This manuscript is a textbook for history and linguistics disciplines in higher education institutions. Historical linguistics studies the historical evolution of language structure and has gone through two phases: 19th-century historical comparative linguistics and 20th-century structuralist historical linguistics. This textbook is divided into two parts: the first part primarily introduces theories and methods, covering topics such as "Dialects and Related Languages," "Historical Evolution of Language Structure," and "Genetic Relationships." The second part elaborates on the comparison and classification of Indo-European, Sino-Tibetan, and Austronesian languages. The entire textbook has a clear outline and concise language, making it an ideal professional course textbook. Chinese historical linguists cannot avoid studying the history of Chinese. Chinese has over three thousand years of literary heritage, and Chinese characters are the only writing system in the world that has remained uninterrupted for thousands of years. Researching the historical phonology of Chinese using written Chinese documents requires a foundation in Chinese phonology, traditional literary studies, and etymology. Traditional Chinese phonology has flourished over the past few decades due to the involvement of Western scholars such as Swedish scholar Bernhard Karlgren and the relentless efforts of Chinese scholars like Li Fangjia and Wang Li. The study of Chinese history, in addition to the history of phonology, also includes the study of diachronic changes in morphology and syntax, all of which rely on historical linguistics.
