Features: "The Iron Chancellor" Bismarck was a legendary figure in 19th-century European politics. He not only unified Germany but also shaped the unique character of the German people. Some said: "He made the German Empire bigger, but made the Germans smaller," while others claimed: "He made the Germans less romantic." In fact, he created European history.
About the Author: Emil Ludwig was one of the greatest biographers of the 20th century. He graduated from the University of Heidelberg with a law degree. In his early career, he primarily wrote poetry and plays. The three-volume work Goethe: A Story of a Man brought him worldwide fame. He pioneered a new genre of biography, renowned for his portrayal of characters' inner lives and psychological analysis. His major works include Napoleon, Bismarck, Lincoln, Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Mozart.
During Bismarck's lifetime, few people loved him, for he rarely loved others. After his death, he was not much mourned, and only a cold statue was erected in a modest place, its gaze solemnly fixed forward, with no expression on its face, making it difficult to interpret his inner world. The purpose of this book is to portray the image of a general who, after repeated victories, sought constant challenges. In this book, I portray Bismarck as a man full of pride, courage, and resentment—these three elements formed the cornerstone of his character.
To this day, opinions on Bismarck's achievements and shortcomings remain divided. To truly understand him, it is essential to conduct an in-depth study of his spiritual history. Historical figures are often complex organic unities, with multifaceted personalities. We do not need academic methods or numerous footnotes; it is necessary today to depict such figures concretely as models or warnings for the world.
In our society, people and politicians are inseparable, emotions and actions are intertwined, and public and private are always intertwined. If an artist can truly take his work seriously, he must understand his subject from multiple perspectives.
By 1830, Bismarck's character had already largely taken shape, though in the preceding fifteen years, his personality had been quite volatile. After that, Bismarck's task was merely to deepen the lines that had already been etched. We provide as much detail as possible about his youth (before engaging in political activities) for this very reason. Most biographers devote only a few pages to this period, and only one writer has described Bismarck's psychology in greater detail and achieved good results—this writer is the misunderstood Klein-Harding.
In 1911, I began to attempt to portray Bismarck's enigmatic nature from a psychological perspective, in contrast to the many myths surrounding this "Iron Chancellor." Ten years later, I wrote a play about Bismarck, hoping it could be performed on a German stage. My earlier works did not discuss politics, but this has changed. Compared to my previous book on Bismarck, this one offers a closer perspective to the truth. The only similarity between the two versions is that the protagonist's character remains inscrutable. The environment has changed, so I now present a fresh and more critical portrayal of Bismarck.
After World War I, we also gained more comprehensive material about Bismarck, which greatly facilitated my writing. With a changed perspective, Bismarck's image becomes even more vivid. Clearly, he was not created for the statue that received no recognition, but for the deeds of a relentless fighter. Bismarck's life was one of constant struggle—sometimes winning, sometimes losing, with an unceasing passion and never-satisfied status.
Sometimes he made many mistakes, but even when he did, they always carried the mark of genius. In short, he was a figure who fascinated biographers.
