Features: Mr. Zhang Guohui has been engaged in the study of modern Chinese economic history for over 50 years. The book focuses on the operational activities of capitalist economy in the production and circulation sectors in modern China; it covers numerous fields such as the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Company, Westernization enterprises, import and export trade, coal mining, metallurgy, silk reeling, and more. During the research process, the author examined a large number of original archives, local gazettes, collected works, domestic and foreign newspapers and books, analyzing them meticulously with evidence, profoundly revealing the comprador characteristics of modern Chinese capitalist development under semi-colonial conditions, as well as the arduous and challenging development journey. This book serves as a reference for understanding China's current economic development. Based strictly on historical facts, the book provides as detailed an analysis as possible of the emergence, development, internal connections, and changes of various modern enterprises under different systems, organizing a relatively clear developmental context. It further explores the characteristics reflected in their development process and analyzes their impact and historical role under specific historical conditions. In terms of the circulation sector, the book conducts a comprehensive examination, selecting traditional financial industries such as money changers and draft houses to study their operational status in domestic and foreign commerce and trade. It also investigates how these institutions evolved from gradual functional changes to fundamental shifts in nature during the socio-economic movement. In summary, over the past fifty years, my research tasks have largely focused on efforts to uncover hidden truths and fill gaps in these two aspects. The selected papers included in this book mostly represent research achievements from that period. In terms of arrangement, the papers are organized in chronological order based on their publication dates.
