Features: The prosperity of a nation does not depend on the richness of its treasury, the strength of its castles, or the magnificence of its public facilities; rather, it lies in the civilization and literacy of its citizens, in the education they receive, their foresight, and the quality of their character. This is where the true interests and true strength lie. Measuring social change involves many indicators. Among the most important indicators is the transformation of the ideal of character. With the thorough implementation of the economic system reform and the timely evolution of the political system, the politically-oriented personality under the old system may transform into an economically-oriented one, and the millennia-old official-centric ideology may convert into a people-centric one. The deeply ingrained subject consciousness may then transform into a citizen consciousness. To transform the consciousness of servitude into a public-minded consciousness requires people to engage in long-term self-education. A thousand gaps and ten thousand distances—lacking a citizen consciousness is the greatest disparity between China and advanced nations.
