Historical Novel: Xiang Yu

Author: Chang Wansheng
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-12-01
Features: This is a modern historical fiction novel. It does not deliberately pursue the dramatic tension, suspense, intricate plots, and thrilling adventures that traditional novels often emphasize, as these elements are naturally inherent in the widely known historical event of the "Chu-Han Conflict." The author follows the historical facts, avoiding the creation of plots or the meticulous carving of characters. Instead, he focuses more on portraying the influence of the historical environment and the era's atmosphere on the protagonist's personality and destiny, making the entire book, beyond the clashing of swords and the scheming of plots, present a deeper historical sense and the grim solemnity characteristic of the cold era, which is often missing in similar novels. The historical destiny of Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, the victor and the vanquished, has not fully shaped corresponding evaluations in the hearts of the people over the past two thousand years. People have deeper sympathy and lament for the defeated Xiang Yu. It is acknowledged that there are differences in the use of people and strategies, and that there are distinctions between political maneuvering and overt or covert schemes. Personality is not inherently good or bad, but there are indeed advantages and disadvantages, and character is clearly divided between integrity and opportunism, as different as heaven and earth, like the clear separation of the Yellow River and the Wei River. This book tells a tragic story of integrity. In the misty tears of the readers, they will see an eternal bronze giant.
