Author: Zhu Yixuan
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2002-12-01
Features: To meet the needs of teaching and scientific research, we have compiled and published the classical novel materials accumulated over the years. This publication includes the "Compendium of Materials on Journey to the West." This compendium is divided into five parts.
(1) The "Story" section collects materials related to the Journey to the West from after the Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to the time before the completion of Journey to the West. By comparing these materials with the novel, we can see some clues of how Wu Cheng'en drew upon literary heritage during the creative process.
(2) The "Author" section collects materials on the life, thoughts, and works of Wu Cheng'en.
(3) The "Editions" section collects materials on the various editions of Journey to the West.
(4) The "Reviews" section collects reviews of Journey to the West since its publication.
(5) The "Influence" section is further divided into three parts: social influence, influence on fiction, and influence on opera. This is not limited to other literary and artistic works on the Journey to the West that emerged before and after its publication. Most of the materials compiled in this compendium are from before the May Fourth Movement. The reason for their high value after the May Fourth Movement is their close relevance to the subject matter. The materials in each section of the compendium are arranged chronologically by the authors. There are a few exceptions, which are due to their close relevance in content. Each entry is annotated with the era, author, volume number of the source book, and the edition used as a reference.
