On January 25, 1945, on a snow-covered plain by the Oberla River in Meseritz, five people were frantically running. They were fleeing. Around them, rows of "Stalin Organ" rocket shells exploded with a roar. Shards of shrapnel lifted the earth's soil into the air, like yellow fountains. A barrage of heavy machine-gun bullets screamed past their faces, covered in sweat and distorted by terror. "Left! Guys, left!" shouted the one in the lead, pointing to a deep valley. Above the valley, a thin layer of snow mist drifted. He stopped, turning back to look at the other four, who were scrambling and fleeing in a tangle. From a distance, they looked like giant wild rabbits, their panicked footsteps winding in all directions, kicking up clouds of snow. Two of them were dragging the third, pulling his arms and running frantically.
