Features: Histology and embryology are two related morphological disciplines. In the long course of their development, they have mutually permeated and advanced each other. In China's medical education, they are traditionally listed as a single subject, "Histology and Embryology." To meet the great development of life sciences in the 21st century, leaders from five universities—Peking University Health Science Center, Capital Medical University, Tianjin Medical University, Harbin Medical University, and Inner Mongolia Medical University—gathered in Beijing to jointly decide to keep pace with the times, leverage their advantages, and publish new teaching materials for medical undergraduates in the 21st century. "Histology and Embryology" is one such textbook. In January 2002, we held a th committee meeting in Beijing, with representatives from the aforementioned five universities, as well as Hebei Medical University, Shanxi Medical University, and North China Coal Medical University, participating in the writing process. The committee, composed of 15 expert professors, thoroughly discussed and determined the following characteristics for this new textbook.
1. To facilitate students' learning of "Histology and Embryology," a new chapter titled "Cell" has been added. This chapter should be concise yet include the latest advancements in "cytology."
2. The textbook will appropriately introduce new knowledge, theories, and technologies, such as the latest developments in "test-tube babies," "transgenic animals," "cloning animal technology," "tissue engineering," "human embryonic stem cells," and the "implantation window" theory. These introductions should be aligned with the "three foundations" (basic theory, basic knowledge, and basic skills) of the discipline.
3. The textbook will emphasize professional English to lay the foundation for bilingual teaching. For this purpose, each chapter title will be in English, and English technical terms will be added. Additionally, an English summary (Summary) will be included at the end of each chapter.
4. To support the implementation of bilingual teaching, an audio CD with English vocabulary read by foreign teachers has been added.
5. The textbook will include additional illustrations, particularly original ones. The layout will also be improved to arrange color figures alongside the text, making it easier for students to study.
