Patient's question:
My cousin's child is now five years old. They have been feeling unwell recently. They went for a check-up yesterday, and the doctor said it's a pediatric astrocytoma. I'd like to ask what other names are used for pediatric astrocytoma?Doctor's answer:
Astrocytoma refers to a tumor formed by astrocytes. Astrocytomas account for 13% to 26% of intracranial tumors and 21.2% to 51.6% of gliomas, with a higher incidence in males than females. Astrocytomas can occur in any part of the central nervous system. In adults, they are most commonly found in the cerebral hemispheres and the thalamus, while in children, they are more common in the infratentorial region. It is advisable to strive for surgery, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy if necessary. For cases that cannot be surgically treated, stereotactic radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy can be considered.
