Does biliary atresia have bile?

Patient's question:

My best friend's child was diagnosed with biliary atresia shortly after birth. I think I've heard of this disease before, but I only knew that it causes jaundice in the face. I don't know if there are other reasons for it, and I don't know if biliary atresia produces bile.

Doctor's answer:

Congenital biliary atresia accounts for half of the cases of neonatal prolonged obstructive jaundice. Congenital biliary atresia is one of the most important pediatric surgical digestive diseases. It is also the most common indication for pediatric liver transplantation. There is bile secretion, but poor excretion. This can explain the condition of biliary atresia, where the bile ducts below the gallbladder can be patent, while the lumen above the hepatic bile ducts is fibrotic.
