Features: During Nurhaci's unification of the Jurchen, while victories were being celebrated on the front lines, rumors of scandals often emerged from the inner court. It is said that Nurhaci's son, the Grand Beile Da Shan, had an affair with Gundi, Nurhaci's senior consort. As a result, Da Shan, who had made significant contributions to the unification of the Jurchen, ultimately lost the opportunity to inherit his father's throne. Because this rumor was half-truth and half-fiction, it has been in some Qing-era unofficial histories. So, did this actually happen in history? Posterity cannot know for sure. However, there is a story in historical records that describes the events in detail, and it involves an important figure—Hong Taiji.
Gundi—Nurhaci's second senior consort, of the Manchu Fuca clan, was also known as the Empress Gundi in history because she was the senior consort of the old emperor. Gundi was the daughter of Mang Se Du Zhu, the leader of the Jurchen Fuca clan. She married Nurhaci at the age of twelve. Because she was plump and beautiful, clever and wise, and a living beauty, she won Nurhaci's favor. Legend has it that one evening, Nurhaci drank a few extra cups of wine in Gundi's palace. This was nothing unusual for a man who had spent half his life at war, but at this time, the old emperor was aging and deeply troubled by the issue of his successor. Thus, he felt a cloud of sorrow in his heart. He embraced Gundi and sighed, "I have wandered in my youth and fought in battle throughout my adulthood. I have suffered half my life, and now I am old and frail." At this point, Gundi burst into tears in Nurhaci's arms. Although she spoke of the old emperor living to a hundred, she also thought about what might happen to her if he passed away, and thus felt a sense of sorrow.
Seeing this, the old emperor comforted Gundi, saying, "I am no longer as I once was. I am old now, but among my sons, Da Shan is kind and honest. If anything happens to me in the future, I will entrust you and your child to Da Shan. I believe he will take good care of you." The old emperor's words, though spoken casually, had unintended consequences. Gundi, upon hearing this, felt a burning passion in her heart. She had always admired Da Shan, the Grand Beile, among the princes and beiles. He had great achievements and high status, and it was possible that he would inherit the throne. After hearing the old emperor's words, she grew even more attached to Da Shan. Therefore, at every banquet, she would dress beautifully and walk gracefully in front of Da Shan, sending subtle signals with her eyes when no one was looking. Gundi was ten years younger than Da Shan, and such actions stirred Da Shan's heart. However, Da Shan, fearing his father's authority, dared not act on his feelings.
In the late Ming Dynasty, the Ming court sent large armies to eliminate the Later Jin state. However, in the crucial Battle of SalHur, the Ming forces suffered a decisive defeat. Although the Later Jin won this battle, Nurhaci, as a military strategist, felt that although they had defeated the Ming, the Ming remained a powerful force. There might be even greater military actions in the future. Therefore, after the Battle of SalHur,
