Features: Chinese Oral Proficiency is a series of textbooks designed for short-term international students in China, focusing on cultivating their oral communication skills. The entire series consists of five volumes, catering to the short-term learning needs of students with levels ranging from elementary to advanced (Level 3) according to the Chinese Language Proficiency Standards. The development of this series was primarily based on the following considerations:
1. Short-term international students exhibit diverse levels and proficiency, and textbooks structured solely around elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels cannot fully meet their learning and teaching requirements. Refining the content, categorizing textbooks into finer levels, and integrating vertical series with horizontal stages will enhance the adaptability and specificity of the materials.
2. The short-term nature of the teaching and the highly concentrated time frame necessitate a focused approach, with selective content coverage rather than comprehensiveness. Therefore, the emphasis is not on systematic mastery of language knowledge but on intensive training in listening and speaking skills. This series was developed with this objective in mind.
3. Short-term teaching must prioritize practicality and timeliness. Topics, functions, and language elements directly relevant to students' daily life, studies, and interactions should be selected for instruction. Additionally, students should be able to see immediate learning outcomes in each teaching unit. Thus, we have incorporated elements of task-based learning, aiming for each lesson to equip students with one or more communicative tasks, basic expressions, and rules, enabling them to successfully complete communicative activities.
4. The textbooks should reflect effective teaching experiences and methods. Alongside providing learning and practice materials, they should offer insights into teaching philosophy and techniques. The contributors to this series are young teachers with extensive teaching experience and innovative approaches, many of whom have received multiple teaching awards. We hope this series reflects their classroom insights and fosters exchange among peers.
5. During the development of this series, we strove for breakthroughs in corpus selection and exercise formats. Authentic materials were prioritized, communicative exercises were enriched, and tools such as images and were used to enhance information and create a realistic, dynamic, and engaging learning experience.
Chinese Oral Proficiency includes five volumes: Introduction, Foundation, Improvement, Intermediate, and Advanced.
