Features: Step-by-Step Fast Reading in Chinese is a series of fast-reading textbooks designed for foreign students with intermediate Chinese proficiency. Its purpose is to provide reading materials for students of varying levels of Chinese, enabling them to improve their reading skills and develop an interest in reading within a relatively short period. The vocabulary for this level covers 3,500 words. The textbooks are spiral-bound and come with answer sheets. It is recommended that teachers distribute them in class, allowing students to complete the reading and exercises within a set time frame—typically 10–15 minutes per lesson. This approach avoids the issue of students previewing the material before class, thereby achieving the goal of training and authentically assessing their reading abilities. After completing the exercises, students simply hand in their answer sheets for the teacher to grade. The students can keep the spiral-bound texts for reference, look up words in dictionaries outside of class while the material is still fresh in their minds, and prepare for teacher-led explanations after grading. The textbook is designed with careful consideration of structural layout, content selection, exercise creation, and text length, all from the perspective of the learner. The organization and arrangement of each section take into account both the connections and differences with previous textbooks, fully incorporating the successful experiences of past materials while thoughtfully evaluating and innovating on the new content. This series was developed as part of a bidding project by the Center for the Development of Teaching Materials for Chinese as a Second Language at Beijing Language and Culture University. During the writing process, Mr. Wang Biao of the center provided direct guidance and assistance. The authors also received support from the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures at Renmin University of China, especially Professor Li Quan, who reviewed the entire manuscript and offered valuable feedback. We extend our sincere gratitude for their contributions!
