Gaoyou Wang Family's Four Works, Number Four: Interpretation of Words in Classics and Commentaries

Author: Wang Yinzhi (Qing Dynasty)
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2000-09-01
Features: Wang Yinzhi initially compiled the "Jing Zhuan Shi Ci" in ten volumes, which was first published in the third year of the Jiaqing reign. It was preceded by a preface written by Wang himself. In the twenty-fourth year of the Jiaqing reign, it was republished, with his teacher Ruan Boyuan composing a preface for the book, expressing high praise and stating, "The Wang family of Gaoyou, both father and son, have mastered the interpretation of classics and also encompassed the nuances of language. I once heard their explanations on 'Zhong Feng' and was always delighted by them," revealing his deep admiration. His disciple Hu Peiyun, who studied under him, also wrote a postscript, saying: "This book specializes in explaining the meanings of empty words in language, opening a path previously unseen in ancient times. It compiles various interpretations, guiding later scholars, and adequately supplements the gaps in the 'Erya'." (See Hu's "Yan Liu Tang Wen Chao" Volume 7). Today, when reading Wang Yinzhi's "Shi Ci," one finds many original interpretations, especially in correcting views that previous scholars were uncertain about, making his elucidations crystal clear. For modern scholars of ancient studies, it is almost a must-have reference for consultation.
