Features: This book, "Four Teachings of Lofan," is a classic work by Yuan Lofan, a Ming Dynasty scholar-official, who wrote it based on his personal experiences. Using concrete examples and comparative methods, he educates his son on how to find a place in life, accumulate virtue, and conduct oneself in society from theoretical, psychological, learning, and action perspectives. It is divided into four parts, known as the "Four Teachings."
First Teaching: The Art of Finding a Place in Life.
It tells the story of how, when he was young, someone told Yuan Lofan that he was destined to be childless and would only live to the age of fifty-three. Believing this, he grew disheartened, lost purpose, and failed to strive for success, intending to spend his life in apathy. Later, after being guided by the monk Yunyu, through practice, he came to realize that fate is not fixed. He then worked hard to study, correct his flaws, and actively perform good deeds. Eventually, he changed his destiny, not only having three sons but also rising to the position of Vice Director of the Imperial Seal Office.
Second Teaching: The Method of Correcting Faults.
How did he correct his flaws and accumulate virtue? There are three methods:
(1) Cultivate a sense of shame.
(2) Cultivate a sense of awe.
(3) Cultivate a sense of courage.
Third Teaching: The Way of Accumulating Virtue.
In modern terms, this refers to how to accumulate virtue and do good deeds.
Fourth Teaching: The Effect of Humble Virtue.
A person must be sincere at their core, and humility is the essence of sincerity. To achieve success and change one's destiny, one must be humble, treat others with sincerity, and earn respect through actions. Only then can one face challenges with ease and find smooth paths in all endeavors.
